A Car Free Existence in an Experimental German Suburb

12suburb051209.jpgDoes a suburb without cars seem like an oxymoron? It isn't anymore...

In Vauban, Germany, Elisabeth Rosenthal of The New York Times reports that there is almost no street parking, driveways, or garages. The town of 5,500 was built three years ago, and charges $40,000 for a parking spot. The result is that 70% of the families who choose to move there opt not to own a car. Instead, the main street is filled with bicycles.

But could something like this work stateside? Quarry Village is a comparable town, and will be built near Oakland, California.

With the kind of weather Germany is famous for, using a bike as a primary mode of transportation would be challenging indeed. Oakland, not so bad.
