In Vauban, Germany, Elisabeth Rosenthal of The New York Times reports that there is almost no street parking, driveways, or garages. The town of 5,500 was built three years ago, and charges $40,000 for a parking spot. The result is that 70% of the families who choose to move there opt not to own a car. Instead, the main street is filled with bicycles.

But could something like this work stateside? Quarry Village is a comparable town, and will be built near Oakland, California.
