Even in an economic crunch, we're seeing new homes popping up in and around Austin, TX, and--wouldn't you know--they're going green.
Check out the latest from Green Builders: homes built energy- and water-efficient with tankless water heaters, embedded irrigation systems, rainwater harvesting, and more.
In states like Texas, where summer droughts are commonplace, we rely on water to keep our yards--be they lawns or gardens--looking lush. But new developers are not only encouraging rainwater collection and drought-resistant plants, they're making the homes water-saving ready from gutters to topsoil.

Oh please. This is sprawl, plain and simple. I don't care how green the builders purport the development to be—if you have to drive to get anything done and there aren't any nearby amenities (like groceries, shopping), then it's sprawl, and sprawl ≠ green. It doesn't matter if the houses are outfitted with Energy Star appliances and the yard has a good irrigation system; can you imagine how much of a waste it is to pump electricity and water to the middle of nowhere? That cancels out the whole environmentally friendly aspect of the project.
