How much do you know about vinyl? If you're anything like we were before we watched the film Blue Vinyl, your answer is probably: Not very much.
Blue Vinyl follows filmmaker Judith Helfand's quest to uncover the true health and environmental hazards associated with the light blue vinyl siding her parents decide to put on their New Jersey home.
It's a hilarious and heartbreaking documentary, and it's airing on the Sundance Channel tomorrow, August 7 (and repeating on the 10th and 12th).
It's the kind of film that, pardon the cliché, will make you laugh (when the Vinyl Institute picks a hotel at the corner of Corporate and Trust Boulevards for an interview) and cry (when Helfand interviews the widows of former PVC factory workers in Italy).
Most importantly, it will make you think long and hard about the vinyl products that are nearly ubiquitous in our homes, offices, and hospitals and the impact those products have over the course of their lifecycle.

This reminds me of our motto when we lived in an historic but rather transitional neighborhood back East: "When vinyl siding is criminalized, only criminals will have vinyl siding."

I've been meaning to check this out, good reminder to get on watching it. Glad to hear there's some humor, that it's not entirely all gloom and doom.
