IKEA to Invest $74 Million in Cleantech

8_28_2008-ikea-news.jpgMore details have emerged about IKEA's investment in cleantech... all $74 million of it.

IKEA will be making an investment in companies that make (or want to make) solar panels, alternative light sources, product materials, energy efficiency and water saving and purification technologies. Their goal is ultimately to sell the products in their stores.

$72 million may seem like a lot. To put that number in perspective, it's 3% of the store's sales from last year.

Still no word on whether you'll need a hex key to put together the solar panels.

So.....they SHOULDN'T be investing in green technologies if they won't do more? Because that's how this comes across to me. $74 million (or $72 million, since you have both numbers in different sentences) is a lot of money. Three percent of an enormous multi-national corporation's gross (which I assume is what you mean by "sales from last year") is significant.

If you don't like IKEA personally, that's your prerogative, but I'd encourage you to recognize them for what they are doing instead of disparaging them for apparently not doing enough.
