We've written here before about SIGG water bottles — promoting them as a great alternative to plastic water bottles. So we were pretty shocked when we read this morning at Inhabitat that SIGG bottles made before August of last year contain BPA in their liner. Shocked and mad.
We've been drinking out of SIGGs for well over two years now. We ditched the good ol' Nalgene in favor of them.
Here is the press release.
So, before we got too upset we did read the release carefully, and were a bit relieved to read this: "These [bottles manufactured before August 2008] have been thoroughly tested and showed 0% leaching of BPA."
Still, we're not comfortable drinking out of these old SIGGs anymore. What should we do? What are you going to do with your older SIGGs?

I am going to keep drinking from my 2 y/o SIGG. Like the treehugger.com article suggested, the issue is with the company's transparency issues, not the product. There has not been any BPA leakage from their product so it works. They just suck for hiding this from consumers for over a year.

It is pretty shocking news. We really dislike our Sigg bottles (which are at least 2-3 yrs. old) because they leak like mad. After around a year the rubber seal on the lid ceases to work. Why do they need a liner anyway? I much prefer the kleen kanteens. They only problem with them is that they lose their shape when you drop them and sometimes that means they no long stand up.

I read over on InHabitots that Sigg is offering to replace the bottles if you call or email in and get a form of some sort...
I tried to email, we'll see what happens...
The email I got was liners@mysigg.com
While I am pretty disappointed in Sigg for tricking us like this, if they are indeed replacing them then that is 110% better than Nalgene/Camelbak who just left us high and dry (literally) with our BPA-filled bottles.

@SFGail, they're lined so the liquid inside doesn't take on an unpleasant metalic taste.

no way

How can you tell if it's an older SIGG or not? I bought mine recently, but it could have been sitting on a shelf for who knows how long...

@jjqueens - check the inside. If it's copper, it's the old liner. If it looks yellow, it's the new one. There are pictures, probably you can find it quick on the Sigg site.
I've been stewing over this for a few days now and the problem is transparency and honesty. The CEO didn't outright lie, but he definitely mislead. I think we can handle the truth.
And as far as BPA is concerned, if you're really concerned about it, never eat any canned food, even food in glass, as the liners in those or the lids definitely have BPA.

The press release from Sigg mentions "a water‐based epoxy liner which contained a trace amount of BPA". So we're talking about trace amounts of something that might leak into the food. Of course it's a problem when you can't make a well informed choice, but there hasn't been any health risk. As Frogspet said, they use a much less throughly tested coating in packaging, even for baby food.

I had that problem too. I got one of the built (NY) bottle totes and that helps stabilize the dented bottom.

This is getting complicated...I have the Nalgene bottles, I have a sigg bottle and I wind up just re-using a coffee mug at work for water. Its just easier.

I thought about getting a SIGG a while ago but because it was impossible to find out what was in the liner I decided to get a stainless steel bottle instead.
It's great that the SIGG doesn't leech but I think the problem here is that people who turned to SIGGs were doing so to get away from BPA in any way, shape, or form. Some folks may not be comfortable, even if it doesn't leech, so the company should've been more up front. Or create a liner that had no BPA at all to begin with. Not sure why they couldn't do that from the get go.
If the issue is leeching, then I don't see a problem with continuing to use the bottle. If it's on principle, then consider what you'll end up doing with the bottle. You should repurpose it and recycle as a last resort.

The website has photos and descriptions of the new liner vs. the older liner with BPA: http://mysigg.com/liner/
I emailed the company to ask about trading in my bottle and they directed me to that page to determine if I had the newer design or not. Turns out I do so I won't be asking them for a trade in. I did appreciate their quick response.

your being fooled if you believe the corporate speak coming from the greenwashing corporatists at sigg. see real green girl's blog if you're truly interested in understanding their willingness to put their profits over the health of pregnant women and children. if any sigg supporters today really knew the truth behind their deceptive practices i believe you would be calling for a sigg boycott, as i do here...
glass and stainless steel are your safe choices. period.
aluminum and any polymer liner are certainly not safe, even if they don't contain bpa. wake up and stop being greenwashed sheep with your wallet heading to the slaughter and your hormonal system getting all effed up.
i believe the majority of pro sigg responses are from sigg insiders. nothing else makes sense.
Again - BOYCOTT SIGG - they deserve it.

Has anyone had any luck getting theirs replaced?
I have 2 that I just love, but not quite so much anymore. I ditched the nalgene bottles as well because of BPA.

Oh, almost forgot. Someone mentioned not consuming canned goods. One brand that is safe and free of BPA's is Eden Organics. They sell a variety of beans and canned tomato products and many other goodies that I'm quite fond of. Here's a link to their products

When I was looking to buy a reusable bottle a year or so ago, I read that SIGG was being cagey about what was in the liners so I went with a Klean Kanteen instead. I wish that what I had read was wrong because I know that a bunch of my friends bought SIGGs because they were easier to find in stores and the sales reps all said they were BPA-free.
I hope that SIGG at least does the right thing and replaces bottles for people who ask, but I don't plan on buying anything from them.
In the winter, I used to get canned tomatoes but started worrying about the BPA in those cans (even Eden's tomato cans have BPA due to the acid), so I have been getting the Pomi brand tomatoes in boxes. I can't seem to find anything definitive on the lining of cardboard, so I'd appreciate any input.

I have a cousin who is pretty crazy about all this stuff too. She drives drives everyone nuts regarding food or drink touching plastic. She even made brownies for all the kids once and they tasted funny, turns out she substituted all the good stuff for "healthy and green ingredients" and after all her effort ... its funny how she is the one who is always sick.
I guess my point is that the more this becomes an obssesion with some of you, the more you will find lurking health concerns with just about everything and it will never end. Let it go, use a mug or a glass and have that be the end of it.

This is disappointing. How am I supposed to believe SIGG in regards to the non-leaching since they haven't been honest to this point?

SIGGs are lined because they are made of aluminum (as opposed to stainless steel). Aluminum has been linked to all sorts of health issues, whereas food-grade stainless steel is naturally safe unlined. Basically, stainless bottles are the way forward. Check out Earthlust bottles - safer than aluminum and just as pretty as anything SIGG offers.
