The Scrap Exchange
Durham, North Carolina

11-03-exchange-2.jpgThe Scrap Exchange is a non-profit located in downtown Durham, North Carolina, that is dedicated to collecting and redistributing industrial discards and reclaimed materials. The store organizes community events, parties, and workshops and also has a "green gallery" of artwork and home accessories made by local artists. We loved many of the items available for sale, especially the vintage voting booth cases that fold into suitcases. See photos below the jump...

You pay a set price to fill up a bag or barrel with as many items as you can fit. Below is the Artists' Marketplace, where you can buy artwork, furniture, and other items repurposed or made from discarded materials.

I live in Raleigh and it makes me laugh that they called that a "vintage voting booth"...It is identical to the one I voted in yesterday!

A friend living in NC sent me a link to the scrap exchange a little while ago, and reminded me of The Recycle Shop at the Children's Museum in Boston. It isn't as large, but holds a lot of happy art project memories.

i went to school in Chapel Hill and would go visit the scrap exchange a couple of times a year. at that point, $10 and you could fill a big paper grocery bag with all sorts of goodies to be used for any kind of crafty purposes. was just thinking recently i'll have to go again on my next trip to NC!

There is a place called AxeMan in Minneapolis that has all sorts of assorted stuff. It looks like a pretty similar place. It was pretty much heaven.
