Bob's Red Mill

8_21_2007-bobsredmill.jpgMost everyone around Portland, Oregon knows that going to Bob's Red Mill is a bit of a ritual experience.

8_21_2007-BobsRedMillbldg.jpgThose who have been around Portland a while also remember when their original building, a mill from the 1880's, burned down a while back as a result of arson. The antique millstones survived the fire, however, as did the business, and today Bob's Red Mill makes over 300 different products, many of which are organic. They also have a line of gluten free products, and a bakery and cafe. If you're in Portland, or the next time you visit, we'd suggest a visit to Bob's Red Mill.

Of course, they also have an online store (a few of our favorite products follow after the jump) but the real treasure is their online, searchable recipe collection with over 1200 recipes featuring whole grains.

I love love LOVE Bob's Red Mill Scottish Oats. They're steel cut, then ground, so the texture when they're cooked is a happy medium between steel cut and rolled. I like to cook them in vanilla flavored almond milk and top with sliced almonds and dried cranberries/blueberries.

Yum!

My boyfriend and I went on a dream date to Bob's Red Mill a few months ago, and we made some sort of bet about whether we'd see Bob or not. I don't remember who bet what, but we did see him! Getting lunch in the same line where we loaded up our trays just minutes prior!

Star sighting! Ok, this is my kind of star sighting, anyway. He wore his red jacket and white snap-brim hat, too.
