U-Haul's Reusable Boxes

6_23_2008-uhaul1.jpgWe're moving and trying out with different ways to go green in the process. We liked the idea of U-Haul's reusable boxes. They are preprinted with labels for multiple moves so that they can be easily reused. So why is this box sitting with our recycling?

6_23_2008-uhaul2.jpgIt's made out of weak cardboard, so it ripped and tore in the normal course of moving. Perhaps with tender care you could get one reuse out of these boxes, but there's just no way you could use them four times as the green-printed labels suggest.

Oh well. Now those liquor store boxes more than one Re-nest reader recommended? They're on their third trip shuttling stuff back and forth and no worse for wear.

As much as a pain it can be, I actually prefer smaller boxes. The large ones get weighed down and are more susceptible to breaking. Banker boxes are nice, if you can get some.

This surprises me, because I've always used (and reused) either U-Haul or Fred Meyer brand moving boxes. I've never had a problem with my moving boxes failing to hold up, even after a couple moves. I mostly use the "small" boxes, saving the medium and large boxes for truly lightweight things like clothing, fabric, blankets, pillows, stuffed animals, my vintage hat collection, etc. Granted, the U-Haul boxes that I have used had a slightly different printing design, so perhaps while promoting the boxes' reusableness, they made them less sturdy and thus less reusable. By contrast, the liquor store boxes, despite seeming sturdy, have tended to fall apart more easily, perhaps because heavy items are putting pressure at points other than where the liquor bottles would.

There are lots of other options for reusable moving boxes.
