With all the January Jumpstart projects going on around here, we're actually thinking about stripping some paint for the first time in our lives. Because we have no space to do projects besides actually inside our house or the sidewalk outside, the thought of all those fumes have us a little worried - what do you do, especially in the winter when the thought of opening all the windows and running fans is unappealingly freezing.
The solution may be Soy Gel from Franmar Chemical - a soy-based paint and urethane stripper that promises to be practically odor free, as well as environmentally friendly. Sounds too good to be true?

I've never used their Soy Gel, but Franmar makes soy based screenprinting products that are wonderful. Their Stripeedoo is very effective as well as biodegradable and non-toxic.

We recently tested two green stripping products: SoyGel and Smart Strip (brand new product).
SoyGel did "ok" on the 115 years of paint and shellac in our brownstone, but Smart Strip (from the Peel-Away folks) was far better in not only getting through the zillion layers of paint, but also dissolving the original shellac.
You can see the results here:

BTW, this stuff sets a new bar in "low odor". It has zero odor. Maybe a little whiff of paste, but that's it.
Best,
