Last night, we stopped by EcoHome Improvement to see their newly expanded showroom—they're now offering design services and locally built, zero VOC, FSC-certified cabinetry.
But owner Taja Di Leonardi could barely contain her excitement about two new finish products.
• SoyGuard, an exterior wood finish made from soybean oil and intended for all exterior wood surfaces was recented added to the shelves at EcoHome Improvement. It goes on in one coat and lasts for two years. The store's resident finishes expert, a physicist by training, was really impressed by the durability of this product.
• PolyWhey finish is also coming into the store soon. AT reader Raedia tipped us off to this product in a comment, so we were delighted to hear it would be available in a store near us. (Also, Raedia and Ian were kind enough to share this house tour with us.)
We've been invited back to try out the products ourselves... look for another post soon with the details.
Awesome, looking forward to your results! I finished the edges of our kitchen and bathroom counters with the PolyWhey this weekend - it took no time to dry, and wasn't particularly smelly. I was able to get 3 coats on (sanding in between) in one day, and then did a light sanding and rubbed it with steel wool to get a nice glossy finish. So far, it's worked really well after a few days of use, and looks great.

I was psyched to test this product on our front door recently, but was disappointed by its "thin" coating. The wood quickly became dirty with fingerprints and mud stains which is not washing off with soap and water, as the label claims. We need to sand down the doors to remove the stains!
Here's a detailed explanation (with photos) of our disheartening experience. I wish it was user error, this products has great promise in terms of its low toxicity and renewable sources. I've read several glowing reviews, is it all hype!?
