Greening the Closet: What About Eco-Friendly PJs?

01_14_09_pajamas1.jpgSince we're on the topic, we're wondering... How far does your green self go when it comes to clothing?

Over the summer, we happened upon a great sale on skirts, pants, and shirts made from organic cotton and recycled plastic bottles. And now we're thinking of getting some new pajamas and wondering...is it worth the effort to purchase organic sleepwear?

We know the answer should be "yes," but...

The more eco-friendly the pajama, the less budget-friendly it seems to be. So we're torn. Maybe a trip to Goodwill is in order for some soft old t-shirts and shorts. We're not the type for night gowns and house coats, but it's nice to have something comfy and cozy to slip on after a long day of work--here in the winter it's been the BF's college sweatshirt and yoga pants.

What do you think? Is organic sleepwear worth the cost? We did find some really cute stuff out there on Etsy. So here we are, torn. Help!

Well, if you don't care about "fancy" pajamas, Maggie's Organics sells a lot of things that could be used as pajamas. I own the organic cotton lounge pants which are on sale for $12. They also have organic camis and t-shirts for pretty cheap. If you don't care about the color, you could order them from their "irregular" sale section and get them for even cheaper.

I rarely buy organic clothes full-price, often waiting for end-of-season sales. Stewart Brown has some nice stuff in their sale section that could be used for pajama tops.

Otherwise, if you can sew, sew your own. I took a beginning sewing class and without any previous experience, made some organic cotton pajama pants. Though to be honest, the ones from Maggie's are more comfortable and are actually cheaper.

Two of my favorite things to sleep in are nightgowns/chemises made from bamboo. One is Cosabella and one is something else - both from Nordstrom. They're super soft and bamboo is a step in the right direction. It's something I pay more and more attention to.

If we really want do good for the world, simpler is better. No need for any PJs, organic or not. Just sleep naked. It gives your body, wallet, mind and planet a break from consumerism.
