Blogging Grist: A Review of Non-Clay Cat Litters

9-23-2008litter.jpg

It just wouldn't be right to let Pet Month end without addressing our favorite pet-related topic (please note our sarcasm). We know you know what we're talking about.

Cat litter.

Sure, we've blogged about it before, and there have been spirited debates over which brand is best -- but now we have some answers.

Leave it to Grist to do a thorough review of non-clay cat litters. Did you know that over the average life of a cat you could dump 2,000 pounds of litter in a landfill? And if you're using traditional litter (i.e, litter made of clay) that's b-a-d.

Grist reviews six brands -- Feline Pine, Swheat Scoop, World's Best, Good Mews, Fresh Step Crystals, and Cat Country Elite.

Want to know which two brands came out on top? We'll give you one hint: One is a Re-nest favorite.

For the rest of the info you must head to Grist.

Funny review. But hey, read the instructions. Swheat Scoop won't stick to the bottom if you just keep it topped up (4 inches of litter.)

My cat must be similar to the author's cat. Same reaction to most of the litters tested.
We use the winner mixed with the 2nd place.
Clay/crystal mix gets used when the army takes me away from the furball.

Don't use baking soda - cats get it on their paws, it tastes awful to them when they go to lick it off, and it can cause them to break their litter training.

It's also loaded with sodium and messes with their digestion.

I use Feline Pine - the non-clumping kind, with the big pellets - and I love it. Lasts for close to two weeks, tracks very little, has no offensive odor or cheap perfumes to irritate my allergies, and stays almost odorless until it's soaked up all the urine it can handle.

My cat does not love it, but she tolerates it alright. Kitties can be bribed to use litters they don't love. If you teach them they'll only be fed after they've used their box, most cats will quickly catch on - they're little Einsteins when it comes to chow. I had a cat who broke litter training once, and when we switched to feeding him only after he'd used his box he immediately changed his ways. Not only did he never break training again, he made a big production out of going to the bathroom and let EVERYBODY know when he finished his business.
