Battery Powered Candles

10_13_2008-candles.jpgWe've spotted these real wax flameless candles around and think they're a more affordable alternative to the expensive Oxo Candela lights we so admire.

Smith and Hawken sells the small size for $15 each. We saw these in person today at a Smith & Hawken store. They look like real candles because they're made of wax, they have a realistic flicker, and they also appear to have a dimmer function. They're available individually or in sets of six for $79. The Oxo Candela lights are sold only in sets of four and run about $70 at Amazon. The big difference is that Oxo's lights include a charger, whereas the ones Smith & Hawken sells require batteries—use rechargeables and you'll come out ahead. Other advantages: electric candles won't burn out in the middle of a party, provided they're fully charged, and they won't burn your house down.

You should have seen our face when we discovered we owned led candles...
My boyfriend and I had just gotten the keys to our first apartment together. It is a new one, and there even wasn't electricity service until a week later, but of course we wanted to spend as much time in our new place as possible. We went down to the 1€ store and got some candles for .90€. We lit them up and then, besides the regular flame, the candle lits up like the ones in the image but changing neon colours, from bright pink to blue... FREAKY!
My dad then opened up one of them to find a battery, a led light and some optical fiber tucked in it. Talk about a waste of resources...

I bought a 6" real wax pillar LED candle for $8 at Tuesday Morning a few months ago - they had a bunch on their shelves. Might be worth looking to see if they still have any at your nearby store.
