We think this concept greenhouse by Dutch designer Daniel Schipper would be an excellent addition to any small urban space. Though this design is not yet available for sale, Schipper is maintaining a list of interested buyers for the future.
We would love to hear from any readers who have created a DIY greenhouse on an urban balcony — share your stories below!
I built a self-watering planter for my balcony, currently growing four tomato plants and a cayenne pepper plant, mostly following the pdf at EarthTainer:
http://earthtainer.tomatofest.com/
This was an experiment since my balcony is very windy and I wondered how plants would do. I grew three plants inside for a few weeks so they got tall and spindly, then transplanted them (and a fourth short, dense plant) into the EarthTainer and waited.
In ~2 weeks, the wind had stripped off most leaves and thin branches, so I wrote it off as a failure and forgot about it. Checking back two weeks later, thinking I'd dig up the dead plants, it was clear they'd adapted-- new, strong growth all over and knuckle-like swellings in the stalks where they crossed cage wires.
Hoping for a good harvest, but it will be late, I think-- haven't gotten any fruit yet but they're all later varieties. The cayenne plant went in recently after being inside, and doesn't seem to like it outside-- time will tell if it can adapt to the wind.
