Another Green Roof from Recycled Rubber: By EcoStar

I dread the day that we'll have to replace our roof - not only for the expense, but the waste that will be generated. Tin and copper roofs have been gaining popularity in our area, perhaps due to the environmental features: longevity and recycle-ability. But what about a roof FROM recycled materials.

Though my hope is that solar shingles will soon be affordable and efficient enough to put on our house, this recycled rubber roof from EcoStar seems like a good solution in the meantime.

The roof tiles are composed of up to 80% recycled post-industrial rubber and plastic, made from things like car bumpers and baby diaper production remnants, that would otherwise end up in the landfill. And with a 50-year warranty, it will stay out of the landfill for quite some time.

This reminds me of a story on NPR that I heard about the recycled rubber playgrounds and fields in NYC. Apparently they are incredible heat magnets and can get well over 100 degrees on a sunny day! I don't know if these materials are exactly the same, but I don't think I would want to attract all that heat to my house and then have to cool it.
