Knocking Down Prefab

9_23_2008-100K-house.jpgSpotted over at Jetson Green: a point-by-point rebuttal of the ideal that prefab housing is cheaper, less wasteful, faster to build, and more green that conventionally built houses. And this isn't some theoretical what-if accounting... the author is the builder behind a serious effort to built the $100,000 house shown above.

It's not all doom and gloom, however: the author brings out several hybrid approaches, where portions of the house can be prefabbed, rather than the entire thing. The post is a great resource for understanding why houses are so expensive, and for thinking about ways to bring the cost of a building project down.
