Recocubes

4-17-2008ecocubes.jpg

We've received quite a few packages recently and a few of them have been packed with styrofoam peanuts.

Now, we happen to know that the peanuts were reused ... but still, they're not exactly made out of the greatest stuff.

When we mail things, we generally use newspaper for packing (or old socks if we're trying to be funny) ... but, these are interesting.

Recocubes are made from recycled paper sludge compressed into cube form with added sugars, starches and B-12 (plant food vitamins). In other words, after you've gotten done reusing them, you can toss them on the compost pile.

All the peanuts that I've received over the last few years have actually been made of compostable corn starch. They dissolve in water in a few minutes and my cat thinks they're yummy (although I try to keep her away from them, as I am not sure compostable equates with ingestable). If I don't reuse them, I just toss them in my compost pile and they "disappear."
