Rather than fall cleaning, we usually embark on a couple weeks of fall decluttering. We round up any unwanted items that have been collecting over the last few months and send them on their way. For those who are cleaning out the junk drawer or hauling donation boxes out the door, we've rounded up a list of common household items that can be recycled...
• If old furniture won't sell on craigslist or ebay, try posting it to freecycle.

• Packing peanuts are accepted by UPS stores for recycling.

• Books can be donated to your local library or to an organization listed here.
• For tips on where to recycle your old batteries, click here.
• If you're buying a new appliance, many retailers will recycle the old one for you.
• In Illinois, stores participating Partners for Waste Paint will accept unused household paint.

Freecycle is an incredible program. We've passed along so many things through the venue that might have otherwise ended up in a landfill. Wholly support it.

I was able to get rid of packing supplies (boxes, paper, and peanuts) on craigslist for free. A lot of people are selling stuff on eBay but don't have materials. I posted and got a number of responses right away. The stuff was gone in a few hours.
