Abundant Earth's Recycled Sweater Blankets

2007_02_16_circle-square.jpg

These wool blankets are a cross between the quilts of Gee's Bend and those of Denyse Schmidt.

They owe their warmth and their rustic vibrancy to their green construction: they're hand-pieced from post-consumer wool sweaters, which are cleaned, softened, cut into strips, sewn together and then edged.

Port Townsend, Washington-based Abundant Earth carries several patterns, including some in cotton and cotton denim, but we're partial to the wool patterns, particularly Circle/Square and the Highlands. And we're particualry impressed by the palettes, which will soften and brighten modern interiors without notching down their sophistication.

The Highlands comes in several juicy palettes.

The blankets come in several sizes: baby, throw, twin full/queen, and king, and run from $119.95 to $499.95. (Hand labor does not come cheap!)

Available here.

Speaking of Gees Bend, why not support that cooperative instead of buying these? They've already been ripped off following the documentary and art shows to the point where they're being forced to sue, and if you ever met one of those wonderful ladies, you'd know that they wouldn't pursue a lawsuit unless it was very necessary.
So, maybe you should help them out instead of a rip off.
