Disturbed by the thought of landfills filled to the brim with building materials that people have discarded, coupled with the ever increasing lack of affordable housing, Mr. Phillips believes anything discarded and durable is a potential building material. About 80% of the materials he uses in his homes are salvaged from other construction projects, or reclaimed from trash dumps or the side of the road.

Mr. Phillips has a two-fold passion: to build homes in a sustainable, responsible way using primarily materials that were or would otherwise have been discarded, and to provide attractive, affordable housing to low-income people.

A few of the unique aspects seen in Phoenix Commotion homes are recycled red, maroon and fuchsia tile that's been glued to a mismatched trim (seen in the 4th picture above); mosaics on the walls and counters made of shards of broken tile; and cushioned flooring made of wine corks.
