When we start seriously cleaning our apartment, we always end up with a bag of clothing we plan to take to our local thrift store, and a bag of shoes that we don't know what to do with. For us, shoes are a trickier thing to get rid of. We don't like to give totally worn down shoes to the thrift store, because we know they aren't going to be good for anyone's feet or health. So what do we do?
Well, if the shoes in question happen to be sneakers or athletic shoes of any sort, we take them to our local Nike store. Their Reuse-A-Shoe program is pretty great. They take used sneakers and turn them into surfaces for athletic fields (like basketball courts, tracks, etc.). They eventually want to recycle the shoes back into shoes.
If you live in an urban area and have a Nike store nearby, chances are you can just swing by and drop off your old shoes. Check, by searching for your hometown here.

I have a ton of old sneakers in my closet. Next time I go to the mall I'll be sure to take them with me to drop off at the Nike store. thanks!
