Second Rotation: Cash For Your (Electronics) Trash

awholelottaelectron765324.jpgYesterday we reported about the US Postal Services new "Mail Back" service, which allows people to rid themselves of small electronics. This is great for non-working items you know you can't sell or giveaway. But what if you're just upgrading and want a little money to fund that new iPod Touch or PSP? Second Rotation wants to pay you for your hand me downs...

unplggdsecondrotation.jpgThe three step process has you first logging into the Second Rotation site, adding your list of items to sell and calculating their worth (this is like going to Amoeba Records, for those who sell their music/DVDs, without the line!). Afterwards, you mail out your items at Second Rotation's expense with a UPS mailing label printed from your own printer, and then upon receipt and verification, they send you a check. It's a nice way to do some spring cleaning, earn a little cash (our sad 5GB original iPod earned us a paltry $16 in fair condition), and keep some items out of landfills.

There are other companies that buy your electronics, like BuyMyTronics.com.

If those "small electronics" are cell phones, there are many more options; I've blogged about this, with some cautions, here.

I sold my crap-ass 5 year old digi camera to them for $8 and was happy about it. Very good experience w/ second rotation (it's also a local company for me).

The Christina Foundation has a really nifty site that helps you find non-profit companies that need donations of electronics. I had an extra printer and print cartridge that I was able to drop off at a local company and get a receipt to write off on my taxes for $40.

It took me a minute to figure out there are words in that picture.
