This weekend in Los Angeles we peeked into 10 homes as part of Dwell on Design's home tours. There was one home in particular that we saw on Saturday that struck us because it worked within the existing structure and really, isn't being green partially about finding ways to reuse and repurpose what is already there? By making subtle changes to the interior, a modern home is created from the bones of a traditional one. We get the sense of space and clean lines reminiscent of a Case Study homewithout tearing down an older home...

Cover up existing windows and replace them with transom windows, retaining light while allowing for a strong sense of privacy. High windows also give the impression that a room is larger. Additionally, rooms stay cooler.
Interior rooms also benefit from transom windows cut into dividing walls whether in a living room...
...or in a hallway. They open up a home without having to knock down walls...
...and lower ones can double as display shelves for pottery and other items.
Remove the ceiling to increase the height in a room; the wood warms up the space as well.
