The trick? A proprietary carbon-sequestration technology that harnesses the energy of footsteps to link ordinary CO2 molecules to recycled nylon carpet fibers. At the end of the product's life, just send the tiles back to Interface. In a process known as geo-sequestration, they separate the captured CO2 molecules and inject the liquified gas into the vast underground limestone deposits common in Georgia. Then the fiber is cleaned and recycled back into new carpet.

As for effectiveness? GULVPROV, a Danish research institute, found that a few hectares of this carpet installed in every home could slow the rate of global warming to virtually zero. Trend-aware colors include smog grey, orange haze, washed green, ice shelf, sludge brown, and smoke blue. All this for $14.99 a tile -- now that's progress.
