Nutshell Entrance Mats

20080730nut1.jpgHere's a good (and green) idea. The under layer of Huffco Entrance Mats is recycled rubber from old tires bound for US landfills. The non-skid, dirt-trapping top layer is made from 100% walnut shells.

We love the inventiveness of the gritty nut surface but, this being an outdoor product, we're left with one question...

20080730nut2.jpgWe worry about critters. Will the walnut shells, even when stuck into rubber, still smell like food?

According to the lone customer review at Buzzillions, our concern is not unfounded. BCW states:

The squirrels have torn up the outer nutshell layer within one week of purchasing the mat.

We hope Huffco keeps working on this idea because we think it's a good one. The mats, available at Ace Hardware in rectangle or half-circle, could still work in the garage!

I've got one. No squirrel nibble-age yet, and I've had it for probably six months now.
