Mark A. Williams of December Box has worked for the past ten years with a wide variety of choice materials from military-spec foams to carbon-fiber, and from iron and bronze castings, to slabs of trees. He doesn't limit himself to exclusively to furniture. December Box's eclectic projects have included lamp dimers, indoor thermometers, and even equine hardware (see bridle cleaning hook above). Mark's attention to detail is paramount to his work. We loved how, in the piece above, the hole in the tabletop was mimicked in the metal base.

Scott S. Behr puts his sculpture degree to work with the metalwork that he builds at his studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Scott got his start in Atlanta, but has spent the past ten years in New York designing and building exquisite metal furniture.


Todd McCollister's sculptural roots are evident from his mathematical designs. The Catenary Chair emerged from a decision to use only straight and catenary curves, which are geometrically unique curves defined by chains hung from two points.

For Palos Samko, a Brooklyn based woodworker, God is surely in the details. He showed up on our radar at Brooklyn Designs in 2006, where we did a little interview with him, and in 2007 and yet again in 2008. It's easy to see why we're always so enamored of his work.

Counter Evolution take upcycyling to the extreme. All of the wood in their handcrafted, contemporary furniture is built using reclaimed bowling alley wood.

NYC Water Tower Furniture uses discarded water tower wood to create their solidly crafted local furniture. In addition, NYCWTF has proposed using the reclaimed wood from the city's iconic water towers to create public benches that can serve as resting/meeting places.

We have to confess. These Shaker chairs are growing on us. Every time we look at them, we like them more. The workmanship is outstanding and we could see them integrated into a home with more modern furnishing. At North Woods Chair Shop, Brian Braskie and Lenore Howe have been working together in Canterbury, New Hampshire since the 1980s to construct furniture in the style and simplicity of the Shaker tradition.
