These dining chairs had short backs ("Low Back") and were my favorite. Look how they fit under the table in this main dining room - Hancock Shaker Village

After over a week of being away, there is so much to share. Where to start? First of all, I want to let you all know that it's officially Art, Crafts & Collections Month here at Apartment Therapy, so to kick things off, I want to highlight a number of pictures I took during the past ten days of Shaker chairs and give you some good sources...

Main house - Hancock Shaker Village

These are from a visit to a friend's house in the Berkshires and the amazing Shaker village up in Pittsfield, MA. I've been there once before, back in 2006, but I've got a much better camera now.

This bench was in the village museum, and was absolutely beautiful. Look at the deep seat, the low profile and the marking on the seat. This could have easily doubled as a bed - Hancock Shaker Village

A lovely pic of a typical tall ladder back chair - Shaker House

Tall stool - Shaker House

Dining room with large collection of small scale, original Shaker chairs. Perfect and comfortable, the small scale allows for many to get tight around the table. Most Shaker chairs that you see nowadays are what they call a #5 (see background), which means they are significantly bigger. We think these would be a #4. Also note the woven back and seat. They did not use the typical checkerboard pattern, but wove a much more interesting off weave pattern. - Shaker House

Small Dining Chair with woven back (37h back x 18h seat, 17w seat front x 14w seat back x 13.5 deep) - Shaker House

Antique rocker - Shaker House

Low Webbed Back Rocker (35h seat back x 26d front to back of feet, 17w seat front x 15w seat back x 15deep) - Shaker House

Webbing patterns change dramatically with differing colors and arrangements. The chairs in the back here are new and the one in the foreground is old - Shaker House
