The Story of a Bench: Part 1

Okay, we’ve finally decided to do it – get a bench made for the landing strip. We’ve been thinking about it for over a year, and have started the process to work with Green Sawn to make a custom designed bench made of reclaimed wood. Yay!

We’ve wanted a bench for our landing strip for a while now – something that could serve dual roles as an entry bench and extra seating for larger dinner parties. It needed to be large enough to stow our boot trays below and be long enough to seat at least three people. And of our course it had to be stylish and sustainable. We found Green Sawn and knew they’d be the perfect resource for this project.

First we met with Green Sawn owner, Aaron Pahmier, to go over our project goals and review the pieces from his portfolio for design inspiration. Aaron gave us a tour of his workshop showed us his huge collection of reclaimed woods – aside from the wood in his workshop he has an entire basement full of the stuff. Everything from full wood logs, to beautiful quarter sawn and plain sawn planks, salvaged wood flooring and old high school science lab tables.

Aaron then sent us three different digitally rendered design options, which we really loved. It was a hard choice but we decided to go with the one that seemed like the best combination of his and our styles. The design complements the style of our current furniture and living spaces, and the look is something that will stick with us for a long time.

Top Row:
• The bench rendering
• The current landing strip
• Dining table that expands really large to seat many, but we don’t have many chairs!
• This is the wood that will be used at the top portion of the bench, reclaimed from old barn flooring
• The beginning design of the top portion of the bench

Bottom Row:
• A view of the workshop
• Stain options
• More wood options
• Detail of wood planks
• Other works in progress

Next up: The design mock-up and stain decisions!

Hey that's my new dining room table! ($400 floor model)

Our friends over at Danish Mafia suggested Bertoia chairs - what a coincidence!

We're going with 10 white resin chairs at $100 each (and stackable) - something you might want to consider for extra seating. (I'd also love your opinion, since your overall style looks similar to mine, including wood floors and white walls.)

Love the bench idea for the entryway (and the design itself especially), but I have a rule about not making guests sit on benches. Half your guests end up sitting around comfortably enjoying themselves over a liesurely meal and the other half (or three people) are dying for it to be over because of the back pain.

asinner -- our table was also a floor model, yay for discounts! The Bertoia chairs were a fantastic Craigslist score. Right now we're using some old Ikea chairs that were left to us from a previous tenant for our additional seating - can't wait to not use them anymore.

Good luck with your new dining set up. I'll be posting pictures of the completed bench hopefully next week!
