GoodGuide: Which One Do You Choose?

9_11_2008-goodguide.jpgWe've always been frustrated that it's so hard to evaluate a product like shampoo or laundry detergent. That's getting easier thanks to a new website called GoodGuide. Here's what we learned about the products on our shower shelf...

We like how the products are individually rated in terms of performance in separate categories (health, environmental, and social.) What we're hoping is that websites such as GoodGuide will create a demand for more disclosure in consumer products. As we found when we looked up Tide with Bleach detergent:
Unfortunately, very few companies currently disclose their full ingredient lists, opting instead to only inform their customers of one or two "active" ingredients in their products. This gap in public disclosure makes it extremely difficult to evaluate the full health and environmental impacts of household chemicals. GoodGuide is working to promote fuller disclosure of ingredients so that the public can know the real impacts of household products they use.

How do your favorite products fare under GoodGuide's rating system?

Cool guide. I'll definitely be checking them out.

I have been using Skin Deep cosmetics safety database to see what's carcinogenic in my cosmetics and toiletries. Always good to have another guide.
