How Walkable Is Your Neighborhood?

0718_walking.jpg

San Francisco was just named the most walkable city by Walkscore.com. We here in New York came in second. Want to see how your neighborhood adds up? See how after the jump...

WalkScore is a site where you simply type in your address and get a rating for the walkability of your neighborhood. Here is how Walk Scores are determined.

We think our neighborhood is truly walkable, as we can access practical necessities, services, and great recreation within walking distance from the front stoop. Why is your neighborhood walkable/ not walkable? How important is walkability to you in choosing where you live? photo via cee-gee cee-gee on Flickr

It's a little unreliable on results, by the way. I typed in my address, in Chevy Chase, MD, near the Bethesda metro station on the DC metro system. Score of 80. I typed in a friend's address, one block away from me -- score of 65! Also, some of the businesses that pop up on the left, which apparently contribute to the score, are no longer in existence (like a bookstore that closed at least 5 years ago)!

yeah, it managed to not find a park even though I live a block away from Ft. Greene Park, which is very clearly marked on the map it provides. somehow it found barnes & noble like 25 minutes away in downtown, even though there are plenty closer independant bookstores.
