Survey: Do You Bike to Work?

04-16-09biketowork2.jpg

With spring finally here, we’re getting excited to break out the bike and get riding. Riding a bike is a great way to be fit and green, and now there’s even more incentive — the government will pay you to bicycle commute to work! Find out more and take our survey after the jump...

The Bicycle Commuter Act, which began January 1, 2009, entitles employers to reimburse their employees up to $20 a month to cover bicycle commuting costs between work and home. The provision was part of the recent Renewable Energy Tax legislation and its aim was to give bike commuters similar compensation to people who receive credits for taking transit or cars to and from work.

Visit the League of American Bicyclists for more information, and don’t forget to pass the info to your employer if they don’t already offer this benefit.

unfortunately, suburban indianapolis is about as far from bike-friendly as it gets...if there were less oblivious SUV drivers and more bike lanes, i would seriously consider it though!

I work from home, so I shuffle to work ;-) But I bike to the library and the coffee shop and the farmers market. And husband cycles to work three days a week (working up to all five.)

Occasionally, only 6 miles one way...
Mostly on casual Fridays... boss doesn't seem to appreciate it very much... and in the spring and summer when it stays light outside later... if it's not already pouring. We are drought stricken here in S. FL, so weather's been generally good for riding.

Oh goodness, I tried biking to work. It's only 3 miles so I thought I could do it, but on the 2 miles of 4 lane "highway" I was run off the road in bright daylight by public transportation twice on the first trip. I have a friend who bikes everywhere in the area... except (he told me this after I biked to work) on that "highway" because of the crazy hills, lack of shoulders, no side/alternate roads, and no one caring.

Come to think of it, that's the one place in town/suburbs that I don't see people riding bikes.

Since I got a new job and a new residence last year, I've been biking the 5 kilometers between the two whenever I can (hail, rain and our very cold winters are the exceptions).

Groceries and other consumables are even closer to my home, so I frequently bike there, too.

The residents in my area seem to have a healthy respect for pedestrians and cyclists, even if they don't always know when to yield right of way.

Unfortunately, there are almost no bike racks in the area (exceptions being the supermarket, pharmacy and light-rail station) so there aren't may bike commuters around.

In the past 5 years or so, probably more, Columbus Ohio has done an incredible job in making the city more bike friendly - and even extending bike paths out to main roads of suburbs. It seems like just about any side of town has a main bike path that can get you into the main part of town.
And there are always talks about expanding it more and more. I'm quite proud of this city :)

I bike to work, and everywhere else. My boyfriend and I are car-free. We take the bus about once a month.

If I had a bike I wouldn't be able to as I work in an industrial area and I could probably get hit by one of the many speeding trucks. I don't have a car though I walk everywhere, take the bus or hitch a ride with a work mate.

Here in Auckland, New Zealand, we used to live in the 'burbs and spent hours every day going to work. Since moving into the city 5 years ago I personally have been walking to work, it's that close. For everything else I use a scooter. We're down to one car and loving it!

Back in Europe though I used to bike everywhere, but then again, they're set with bike lanes and all the rest of it. Plus, everybody is aware of bikes over there. In down town Auckland, biking is still a bit of an adventure.

I wish that I was a little less lazy and could force myself to ride to work. But between the eight miles it takes to get to work and the early hours I drive. I got my bike out over the weekend, as it seems that Omaha has finally thawed enough to use it regularly, and found out on my way down a big hill that my brakes don't work quite as well as I thought they did.

I just started this year, and am loving it!
I don't bike on rainy days (yet) but it's a beautiful ride in because I'm able to take trails 90% of the way!
