We talk about organic produce here all the time ... but what about pet food? What are your thoughts on organic pet food?

After the big pet food scare, we switched our dog to Wellness Brand- it isn't organic, but is all-natural, made in the USA, with high-quality and human-grade ingredients.

Sure, partially for their health, partially because organic isn't about health but about the environment as well.

Like SisterRae I feed my guys only high-quality food now and some of our regular favorites are:
Canidae
Wellness
Natural Balance
Eagle Pack Holistic Select

I would also like to recommend that everyone check out this site where you can read detailed analysis and reviews of 100s of dog foods: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com

We feed our our cat Flint River Ranch, which has no chemical preservatives, artificial flavors or colors, and no BHA, BHT or Ethoxyquin. It is also higher in protein than average cat foods and lower in carbohydrates, which is supposed to be better for the kidneys. She eats a 1/4 cup morning and night, has healthy fur and skin and won't touch anything else. I had visions of supplementing with raw organic poultry stuff from the health food store, but the cat wasn't on board.

Our geckos and frogs eat crickets...not sure what goes into raising a cricket, organic or not, but when we supplement their diet with fruit, they get organic baby food!

Our dog seemed to have health issues with the Science Diet she was on when we rescued her, so we switched to The Healthy Kitchen, which is made locally to us and as far as we can tell superior to what we feed ourselves, quality-wise. Sad but true!!

I feed my cats the Holistic Cat food from Trader Joe's. It's organic and high protein, low in carbohydrates. I think it's important to feed them well so that they stay healthy. Their fur is thick and shiny and so soft. As an added bonus their wastes don't smell as bad.

I feed my cats a mix of high quality food and some of it is organic. The local store where I get the food is often out of one food or another, so I just started making a mix of everything that I get so that the cats don't get upset stomachs from an abrupt switch. My cats experience digestive upset from food changes pretty easily.

I have celiac disease and am also allergic to corn, so I pick cat foods that don't have any of my own allergens. I don't want to risk making myself sick by touching the food or from the cats touching me. This has an advantage of being better for them because they don't particularly need wheat, rye, barley, or corn.

I have used EVO, Innova, Nature's Variety, California Natural, Nutro Natural Choice, Merrick, Eagle Pack Holistic Select, and others at different times.

I would if my cat didn't require a special diet (though I think the ingredients in it are not good, but it is supposed to prevent crystals forming and he is super prone, had to have surgery, etc)

two of my kitties eat Origins, which is organic and 100% meat, one kitty has to eat a special medical diet so he does not get sick again

My turtle eats veggies and worms from the garden, and my lizard eats mealworms I grow myself (they eat the veggies the turtle leaves behind)

Unfortunately, I'm feeding 7 feline mouths (thank you neighborhood stray problem) so I feed them the best I can afford, but it isn't always organic. I actually tried feeding them people chicken because it was cheaper, but they wouldn't eat it if I cooked it, so I had to go back to stinky canfood. I DO shun wheat gluten and anything that doesn't list actual meat as the first ingredient.

My two rescue pups get Newman's Own Organics. Cleared up my poodle mix's skin condition and my terrier mix doesn't have a runny eye anymore (that icky goop that sticks to her fur). It's amazing. :) NEVER would go back.

My rescue cat gets PetPromise, not organic but human grade ingredients.

the cats turned down paul newman's organic and some other stuff. they eat innova and the occasional raw food from Jeffrey's here in SF

for about 2 years i made their raw food (mixed different meats and bones and gizzards and supplements). it just got to be too much for me. i myself don't eat meat and cutting up chicken livers was a big challenge...

My bunnies eat pellets and hay and neither are organic (I don't know where or how to find organic versions of those - at least not locally). They do eat organic veggies though.
