Survey: Does Your Pet Sleep in Your Bed?

01-14-10dogbed.jpg

While the extra body heat can be so tempting on a cold winter night, many people say allowing your pet to sleep in you bed is a big no-no. Not only does it allow them to be in the "pack leader" role of the family, but the hair and dander can be problematic for bed cleanliness and an irritant for those with asthma and allergies.

We're on the fence, because although we love the extra warmth in the bed, our cat tends to want to play about an hour before we're ready to wake-up. But we've managed the hair and dander issues by cleaning our sheets often and replacing our pillow cases even more often. But we do know people who won't even allow their pet in their bedroom because of these issues.

How do you deal with pets in the bedroom?

Our three cats sleep on the bed with us, if you can believe it. The duvet cover is easily washed on a frequent basis, and we don't have a problem with allergies or asthma.

We like to cuddle!

My kitty sleeps in bed with us. He seldom sheds and is low-dander because he is brushed regularly and gets daily "baths" (we rub him down with water after we get out of the shower, which forces him to take extra time cleaning himself. So hair and dander haven't been an issue with him and they weren't with our previous cat, who was also low-dander and an infrequent shedder. Even if we had a Persian, though, we'd probably still let her on the bed.

Not a chance. Our dog's not small, and he actually doesn't like jumping on furniture (old bones), but even if that wasn't the case it would still be a no. I love him, but he's a shedding dander machine with feet dirtier than my shoes, who thinks rolling in interesting smells is the finest perfume. If he was a person with the same hygiene I sure wouldn't share a bed with them.

Our cat sleeps in our bed when we forget to lock him out. I think washing things frequently does the trick so I am more concerned about the cats apparent need to sleep on our heads than dander.

And can anyway tell me what kind of dog that is in the pic above? thanks!

Nope, he has his own bed in the room though. We don't want his funk, dirty feet or early in the morning movements in bed with us.

I let my APBT Zooey sleep with me. She snores and has puppy dreams that are hilarious to watch, but i've gotta say the both of us on a full size bed sometimes becomes a space battle. She has yet to understand that she needs to sleep parallel to me, not perpendicular in the middle of the bed. She's my backup alarm clock too, she always has to pee at 7:24am. She's only allowed up there to sit or sleep. No playing or bone chewing or itching and scratching.

My kitty crawls right on my belly, nuzzles and licks my face. I don't think I could stop her if I tried.

I have a 70 lb dog that sleeps with me. He has his own bed that he prefers during the day.

she's my heat source. I think she gets cold, too, so she hops in. My husband is too hot to snuggle, so the dog wins. She sleeps on my side, he doesn't let her sleep on his. We do have bed hog problems, but I think it was an issue before the dog, anyhow. ;)

I know, trainers say this is the ultimate no-no, but ...

I'm sure our dog would love to, but she seems to do just fine in her own bed in another room. We spend lots of time cuddling with her at other points during the day.

Also our vet said that it was good that she already doesn't sleep in our room, because it will reduce the chances that she'll be jealous of the baby we're having in a few months--she can't feel displaced from the room if she's never even been in it.

Both my 60 lbs Labrador Retrievers sleep in their crates in the bedroom at night. However, the doors are open and the dogs are free to move around the bedroom and sleep on the rug, if they'd like.

Both dogs - 90 lb. Lab and 45 lb. Border Collie in bed with me every night. I haven't had to turn the heat on in my bedroom for three years! I figure since they're helping me save on my energy bill they can stay...plus, I'm too much of a softy to kick them out.

my 60 lb pointer sleeps with me after my husband gets up and moves to the couch/my daughter's bed when she gets in our bed... it is musical beds around here.

My three cats sleep very close to me in the winter. In the summer, they often choose to sleep elsewhere around the house.

I doubt I'd be as accomodating if I were a dog owner.

I tried to ban my cat from the bedroom. She, however, had other ideas. She started throwing herself at the bedroom door and yowling. "MROW" thump "MROW" thump "YROOWWWLLL" THUMP!!

Needless to say, I caved and now she sleeps where ever she wants. In winter she snuggles by my knees or hips, but in the summer she's more likely to want space or sleep under the bed.

My dog (may she rest in peace) generally preferred to sleep on her dog bed next to my bed, but would crawl up onto the bed to snuggle with me for a bit before I got up in the mornings.

Our 6 year old sleeps on an awesome large round dog bed in our bedroom with us. it's an l.l.bean product (& has his name embroided on it!). He's so funny.... we close our bedroom door during the day & if he's ready to go to bed before we are, he'll just walk right over to the bedroom door & wait for us to let him in. he does like to sleep on our bed when we're not in it though! here's a pic i took of him recently for my blog: http://craftscafe.wordpress.com/2010/01/12/throw-pillows/img_1289-jpg/

our american bulldog, lucy is only allowed up on the bed after 6 am...i think she sets an alarm because she always comes over to the bed from her mat and whines at 6 until i let her up. she is too big to share the bed all night!

i think there should be another option on that survey.

yes we sleep in the same bed, but not by choice. i usually leave my door open and chloe, my corgi mix, comes up and loves to sleep horizontally to take up as much space as possible. when she readjusts, she likes to try and push me out of her way. now that she is getting older, she gets pretty grouchy if i try to move her off the bed.

if i had my own way she would sleep by herself, but she's much happier in my bed, under the covers with her head on the pillow too.

The cats already know they are the pack leaders, so letting them sleep in the bed doesn't change that much... they only care in the winter. I wouldn't mind as much if they didn't steal the covers and take all the foot space...

What started out as a "no dog EVER in the bedroom rule" changed when our dog was about, oh, 3 months old and was just too cute to ignore. Now she's a 60-pound leggy creature who insists upon stretching out between two adults. She owns us, but we're ok with that. Plus, she's really warm in the winter and usually chooses to sleep in the living room during the warmer months.

The Husband and I always slept with our pets. The Dog curled up beside me. The Cat at our feet - or occasionally on one of our chests - whatever she felt like.

Then a puppy we pet-sat brought fleas from her brief stay at a doggie hotel. The fleas went everywhere.

We annihilated all the fleas through frequent cleanings, Borax treatments and a flea bomb. But we don't allow the pets in the bedroom anymore, in the hopes that if there's another infestation, the fleas won't spread as widely.

Our 10 lb. miniature dachshund sleeps with us, usually between one of our legs. For the first month we had her, we tried to make her sleep in the crate and then gave up! She loves to cuddle and is a lap dog to a fault!

We have a Wheaten so not worried about the allergies but she usually gets too warm after a while and ends up dropping down to her spot on the cool, wood floor. You can let your dog on the bed and still be a "pack leader."

We have three dogs - only the toy poodle sleeps in the bed. The mutt would like to sleep in the bed, but just takes up too much room, and I got tired of the hair in the bed. She still jumps in with my husband if he goes to bed before me, but she knows who the pack leader is, and gets down as soon as I enter the room. ;) The Sheltie is too old to jump up on the bed, and sleeps on the floor.

Occasionally the two bigger dogs will decide to go sleep with the kids, and that's fine, too.

We originally didn't want our dog sleeping in the bed, and at first she didn't. Suddenly she had a change of heart and jumped in bed one night and tucked herself in under the covers. While she's sometimes a great heater use, it's also a little annoying since she tends to switch between both her dog bed and ours at night. It's hard not to let her sleep with us though since she's just so cute.

My cat sleeps in bed with us and my only complaint is that she prefers his side or the end of the bed. She probably knows that if she got near me I'd snuggle her within an inch of her life for an entire 8 hours.

the husband, the pug, the black cat and i all sleep in a queen sized bed. there used to be a grey cat there too but he has gone to the duvet in the sky. often there is a 5 month old baby in there as well. there isn't a lot of space but i wouldn't have it any other way. i have never worried about the pug and the baby... they both know they are loved and get along great. i think if the pug had her way she would sleep in the crib with the baby... but that's going too far!

There are scratches and a chunk bitten off from my door as testament to how little the cat likes being shut out of the bedroom. He will meow himself hoarse. Repeatedly.

It's cute that he sleeps on my pillow next to me, but I wish he didn't sleep in the bedroom.

My cat Charlotte sleeps in the bed with me, and I would be upset if she didn't.

I am a cat sitter, by the way, and I do sleepovers with some of the kitties, and for the most part they sleep in the bed with me.

The late great Peeper, who didn't want to have anything to do with me and wouldn't even let me pet him, never got into bed at the same time I did. But I would wake up every night and find him lying next to me with his head on the pillow. It was so cute.
