Ah, springtime. A warm breeze; budding trees; the tweeting of birds. And the infernal sound of lawn equipment.
Here in California, we're in the middle of a drought... but with all the green grass around us, you wouldn't know. We're wondering how many of our readers have outdoor space of the plantable sort, and for those of you who do, whether it's planted in grass or something a bit more green.

We have a front lawn area that is mixed with some bushes and rocks and mulch. We live in a drought prone area, so the grass is a pretty hardy mix and most of the plants in the rock/mulch areas are drought resistant. A few however are not and we're transitioning them out. For example I just replaced some wilty plants with a yucca. In the back we have full blown xeroscape mixed with garden (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and strawberries). All the plants outside of my garden are adaptable to a dry climate. Right now, my son is learning to walk and he loves to play outside, so we spend a lot of time in the front yard. If we had the money to do it over (the house was like this when we bought) I'd xeriscape the FRONT and have a patch of grass plus a deck in the back.

I rent therefore I have no choice in the lawn. The good thing is that my landlords let me go pesticide free my last landlord wound spray every 2 months!) and I can plant whatever I want... so lots of ornamental drought tolerant grasses are appearing in the flower bed
