The Green Cure: Are You Ready?
Fall 2009

at-book.jpg

The Apartment Therapy Fall 2009 Cure kicks off in one week! This is Apartment Therapy's 8th Cure, and as a way of upping the ante, we're encouraging all of our Cure-ees to take on an extra "green challenge," and we'd like Re-Nest to help lead the way. Re-Nest will be launching its first official Green Cure in which we work through our homes and the Apartment Therapy: The 8-Step Home Cure book upholding green standards every step of the way. As we get ready for this exciting two month journey, we want to hear from you on how you'd interpret a green version of the book and what areas you'd like help on:

We'll have a lot more details coming next week, including the official Cure page where you can sign up for the 8-week Cure, join a discussion board, and follow along as we green our way through our homes. In the meantime, make sure to get a copy of the book. You can purchase it at Amazon for $11.20.

Tell us your thoughts! What do you need to cure?

Hello everyone! Tell us what area of your house most needs a "cure." For me, it's the closets! They've gotten a bit...um...unorganized.

I really have to do the books (purge, sort, reshelve), but I'm not sure if I can do a full cure right now. I think I'll just tag along and cheer; maybe I'll get inspired!

RebeccaCT, that's great! Do what you can. We'll be here to help you where you need it.

We are curing our insulation woes. Today, my husband finished air sealing the attic & within the next couple of weeks we'll rent the machine to blow in recycled cellulose insulation into the attic. Not a sexy cure, but it's much needed in the cold New England climate.

Once the insulation is done, we can transfer our clothing storage (garment racks) from the damp basement to the attic. Again, not a sexy cure.

By the time that's done, it will probably be time to secure the plastic (so not "green") to the windows to keep drafts down. Guess I won't get to stripping & fixing all 17 windows this fall :(

I would like to participate this year as well. Where can I find last year's Green Cure details? I'm not sure what this entails yet. I'm mostly concerned that we don't own, we rent and therefore can't make major modifications to our living space, but I figure that won't be that big of a detriment.

The Kitchenette, don't worry about that! Most of us rent as well, and the Cure is not about making any major, structural renovations or modifications to your home. It's about clearing out the excess "stuff" that's weighing you and your home down, and turning your home into the restful haven it should be. There was no "Green Cure" last year.... just a regular Cure on Apartment Therapy's city sites. I will be posting more about the Green Cure later this week, so stay tuned! In the meantime, make sure to pick up the book. That'll give you a good idea of what to expect.

Wardrobes need doing, they're a mess (to the point that I don't remember what's at the back, and I have a good memory!); greenwise we need to continue on our little journey to green all our cleaning stuff - at the moment we've taken a halfway step, moving to Earth Choice washing up liquid, toilet cleaner and washing detergent, and Seventh Generation dishwasher powder, as well as to Lush solid shampoo, conditioner and soap in the bathroom rather than standard liquid varieties & shower gel (well, I've moved to the Lush stuff, my fiance is slowly being forcibly moved because I do most of our grocery shopping and haven't bought more shampoo etc to replace his running-out bottles ;-p). I think we still have a bottle of bleach in the cupboard somewhere, and I haven't yet tried cleaning anything with bicarb/vinegar homemade cleaners. Will do at some point soon though - how well do they work on toilets?

I also intend to learn how to make soap. I've got a bunch of books out of the library, just haven't had the time to really read them. And I'm a bit intimidated at the moment. But I'm thinking that homemade soap has got to be at least as green as Lush soap, possibly even more so.

Just bought a house that is now treated as "shelter" and not a home - lots to do and with alot of pets, I'm cleaning-challenged. I'm used to moving so to think about staying put and hanging pictures and curtains is very foreign!

We just downsized from a 2 bedroom house to a 1 bedroom 600 square foot apartment half way across the country. We've reduced most of our possessions, but I'm still holding on to waaaay too much. And what we do have needs a place to go. Also, I'm a horrible housekeeper. So getting into some sort of a routine would probably be good for me. We have 2 cats and hardwood floors and they shed like there's no tomorrow. And they track litter everywhere. I can't sweep fast enough. Litter on the floor grosses me out.

Books, definitely. Hallway storage. Closets.

My husband and I are living in a great 1 bedroom, 580 sq. ft. apartment. We are expecting our first baby in mid December, so the Fall Cure coincides nicely with the necessary projects we need to finish before she arrives.
Closets and clothes are my #1 issue. Then overall de-cluttering and making room for baby. I would like to have a lot less stuff, which is hard to do when people keep giving us baby supplies.

forgot to mention... I am excited about this being a "green" Cure because I am hoping to incorporate more eco friendly products/habits into my life. Nothing like popping out a kid to get you to change your ways.
