Tote Bag Excess?

1_9_2008-bag.jpgWe've been wondering: is there such thing as too many reusable tote bags? We're considering our own glut: two in the car, two in the kitchen, and cleaning out the basement we came across another stash, making for three more.

While we're sure that seven tote bags will balance out the petroleum, paper, and energy needed to make the alternative, we can't help but think that the sudden stylishness of tote bags (viz., Anya Hindmarch) is its creating a new kind of problem: tote bags that need to be replaced, not because they are worn out, but because they are (gasp) out of style.

The number of tote bags discarded can't possibly come close to equaling the number of plastic bags discarded. And I have no intention of considering my tote bags as either stylish or out of style. I'll replace them if they wear out.

The majority of the bags that I have are just simple and without logos or patterns-- just simple, plain Envirosax (and I love the convenience of being able to tuck them into my purse!). I do admit to being a sucker for the Whole Foods seasonal bags-- I love the vintage-inspired patterns. While I try to have only as many as I'll use practically, I do make sure that any that don't see a lot of use get sent off to my mom or grandmothers-- they do a lot more grocery shopping than I do, and always have good use for them. Its a great way to get someone you love to use a reusable bag.

I get one at every conference I go to. I'm overwhelmed! I've never paid any money for a tote, except for the one insulated one I have and my chico bag.

We've got about 4 tote bags right now. 2 grocery sized ones, and two conference freebies that are too small to be used much.

The grocery sized ones get used a fair bit, since each one holds about 2 plastic bags worth of groceries, or 1 large knitting project and several books. I don't see any reason to get more or to get rid of perfectly good bags. I expect my bike panniers to wear out before the grocery totes, and I don't expect *that* to happen anytime soon.

Fancyd: I've got over a dozen conference bags and I feel the same way. I periodically give them to the salvation army, hoping that someone can find use for them that way.

i get extra use out of my plastic bags by using them inside my garbage pail. does anyone have a good alternative? i'd love to go bag-free but i can't see throwing garbage straight into the pail.

I totally agree with Joan. I assume that the people worried about their reusable bags becoming "outdated" aren't even using them as shopping bags.

I have a main canvas totebag and carry 2 folded bags. If it's a big grocery day, I make sure to have some cheap plastic crates in my trunk so I can carry them home.

Hmm, maybe we should get a head start on everyone and start a "reusable bag reusing service," where we take excess/ unwanted bags and give them to people who want them.
