Green Wall Finishes from Straw Sticks & Bricks

20071121straw1.jpgGlitzy and green!

Straw Sticks & Bricks offers a variety of wall treatments, including these 100% recycled aluminum tiles. Alumillenium Tile is available in 2x2" or 4x4" and in three different finishes: brushed, vibrated, and sandblasted.

At about $30 per square foot, the tiles aren't what we'd call cheap. Yet they're certainly flashy (in a subdued way) and remind us of a school of fish swimming across the wall.

If metal isn't your thing, jump down to see some of SS&B's green wall alternatives.

Their small stock of glass tiles are 100% recycled. We had no idea that making them actually uses "50% less energy than the production of similarly sized ceramic tiles."

We're most impressed with their HUGE selection of multi-hued cork wall tiles. Seen here in Grape, Blizzard, and Blueberry, the cork gets its color from a water-based dye which is applied to the bottom layer of cork. At about $4 per square foot, this colorfully green wall treatment is a bit easier to swallow. Not that you should actually eat it...

Recycled glass uses 50% less energy than producing new glass from silica (sand) because it needs to be heated to a lower temperature to re-fuse into the new product.

Similarly, tiles need to be fired a a very high temperature.
If recycled glass tiles can be produced at a lower temperature than porcelain tiles, they you reap huge energy savings.
