Detours Toocan Juicy Panniers: Recycled Bike Accessories

04_08_09_panniers.jpgWith spring in the air, we've been using our bike more and more for grocery trips. We have our eye on these colorful, recycled and recyclable panniers, once we're ready to upgrade. They sport a waterproof rubber bottom, a removable shoulder strap, reflectors, a wide-mouth zipper, and interior pockets. And they're made from a very specific kind of garbage... Can you guess what?

These puppies are hand-woven with nearly 100 recycled fruit juice pouches! The bags are made by a program called Money For Garbage, which gives jobs, support, health care, and even small business loans to women in the Philippines.

The makers caution against carrying sharp, pointy objects in these panniers, though, because the recycled articles are not as strong as puncture-resistant nylon. We don't often purchase sharp objects while we're grocery shopping, though, so we don't think it'll be a problem.

In any case, we'd like to ride around with a fond memory of childhood attached to our bicycle, wouldn't you?

Available from the source at Detours, or at REI online and in stores.
