Green Camping (or Not?) Take a Solar Shower?

7-21-2009soalrtent.jpgWe've been camping for a very long time now, and we can honestly say that we've never seen anything like this 5-gallon solar shower. It's making us laugh. It's blowing our minds. A hot shower while camping? We could get used to that idea ...

The pop-up shower itself weighs about 6.5 lbs (reasonable if you're car camping, not so much if you're hiking in) and it includes a 5-gallon PVC Solar Shower. Now, obviously, we don't like PVC. But we're still intrigued by how this whole thing works and if it's even necessary.

We've never tried a solar shower before. And we'd probably just stick with hopping in the nearest ocean, lake, or river (part of camping is being dirty all the time, right?). What do you think? Have you ever tried one of these?

I've used a solar shower (but not with matching pop-up "hut") I've done a major cross-state bicycle ride many times, where approved campsites were far from the available showers - and then factoring in the cost of the shower, time spent waiting in line...well, the sun shower seemed like a good option at the time. It's not a bad deal, all around. You have to use it "navy shower" style, but otherwise, if you need/want to wash your hair and other sweaty or dirty parts, it does the job. Don't really know how long it takes to heat up, but it was usually not freezing cold and more tepid.

showers when camping? I think not. rivers, lakes, buckets of icy water, or a damp washcloth are all a *real* camper needs.

I bought a friend one of those solar shower (sans hut) bag things when he was in Iraq and there were no showers. He said that he had to be careful not to leave the bag in the sun too long or else the water got scorching hot. I doubt most people are camping in the Middle East, but I thought I would pass on the info anyway.
