Green Escapes: Sea Ranch, California

searanch082808.JPGGrowing up in California, I remember several friends who would vacation each year with their families in this mystical place they called Sea Ranch. I'd never been, so I would ask what they did there - to which they would always respond, "read alot on the beach." As a typical high school boy, this didn't exactly sound like my ideal vacation. Right now however, after the past week of tropical storms and humid southern summer, I can't think of a better green getaway.

Located three hours North of San Francisco, it's a bit of a trek to get there but the 10 miles of Pacific Coastline that you'll gain access to will be more than worth it.

According to an article on Haute*Nature, Sea Ranch is one of the first eco-communities, built upon a former cattle ranch and restored to its natural state with native trees and grasses. The homes in the area were designed by and for people with shared environmental ethic, to live lightly on the land, approximately 40 years ago. All the native flora and fauna left in its original state is a testament to the concept of carefully planned development with a minor environmental impact.

There is also the Sea Ranch Lodge (20 guestrooms and a great restaurant) where great views meet innovative regional (read local) dining. This would be a great treat during a bicycle tour or simply for a weekend getaway. And if the views weren't enough, they're dog friendly!
