Driving on Florida's Turnpike might be getting a bit more green thanks to a proposal to replace existing service plazas with "green" replacements. How can a service stop be green? Check it out after the jump ...
USA Today article "Rest stops get 'green' face lifts" describes how improvements being made to Florida's Turnpike include a plan to make to four of the eight gas-and-food rest areas more green. Spearheaded by Gov. Charlie Crist's campaign to reduce greenhouse gases, the turnpike authority will be working with the University of Florida to study the use of solar energy before beginning on the service plazas.
The new service plazas will comply with LEED standards, and will hopefully leave a lasting image with visitors regarding sustainability. The stations will be designed with the following green features:

Rail projects, green rest stops, and recycled paper requirement for filings in state courts...I guess it's a start. If only Gov. Crist would spearhead a campaign against unchecked suburban sprawl and "growth for growth's sake," Florida might actually make a dent in the long process of greening itself.
