It's actually called a "butter bell" or sometimes a "french butter crock". You can easily find them on etsy.com (search for either) for a reasonable price. You'll be supporting artists AND you get soft, creamy, spreadable butter out of the whole deal! P.S. Plain water is fine if your butter is salted, but if you want to do this with unsalted butter, make sure you dissolve a little salt in the water.
